Buchla Ziggy Analog Desktop Synthesizer

The Buchla Ziggy is a desktop synthesizer based on the Buchla "Complex Oscillator." It offers a new, "unpatched" instrument experience with a fast, gestural method for assigning modulations and composing music.

Ziggy modernizes and simplifies sound generation in the style of West Coast synthesis. Like any musical instrument, it can be played independently. A portable keyboard like the Buchla LEM218 is a perfect complement. It can also be used with a variety of devices from other manufacturers and DAWs via MIDI, USB, and 1 V/octave CV.

Electronically, Ziggy's oscillators and low-pass gate are purely analog. The digital control of these elements allows Ziggy to save programs at the touch of a button and modulate them. A digital effects unit shapes the final sound with reverbs, delays, distortions, and more.

With Ziggy, you can quickly and easily create music and design sounds. Surprises are guaranteed. Sounds can be saved using the simple preset system. LEDs indicate assignments and modulations. Special chaotic modulators can be accessed via the menus to control sounds in unusual ways. Scales and alternative tunings expand the sonic spectrum. Pitch controls can be quantized to scales, allowing them to be played melodically.

With two analog oscillators, multiple modulators, various tunings, envelopes, wave folding, and shaping, a wide range of sounds can be generated. Although Buchla is often associated with purely experimental music, Ziggy can be used to synthesize strings, drums, leads, percussion, and deep basses.

Its patch-cable-free design, USB-C power supply, and MIDI control make it easy to integrate into an existing setup. The device can be configured via the menu or using a web browser and the web app.
